To say that a game has rules is another way of saying there is a structure to adhere to in order to understand how the player can compete and win. The term rules sounds stifling, but in the world of gaming, it’s the very framework that allows the player to master the gameplay. This isn’t to say that every single game has rules; however, some people would argue that having rules is one of the definitions of what a game is. Other gamers prefer to design and/or play more freeform games that don’t rely on rules.

This concept is a bit elusive; however, the core understanding of what a gameplay style is becomes easier if you think of it this way: games that have similar challenges with similar methods for winning or besting the challenge tend to be classified the same way. Games can also be classified by the kinds of 26 Chapter 2 • Gameplay Styles people who like to play them. Using that method for categorizing a game is known as understanding the demographic for the product. In a game, the player usually has a goal that he or she is attempting to achieve.

Other games, like id Software’s Descent, can detect when God Modes are turned on and reduce the shields that protect the player in the game. Some players enjoy this challenge and access the God Mode for its short duration just to be able to attempt the level with a handicap. The bragging rights associated with winning that way are important to these players. Many gamers who have already played through a game and wish to replay but scoot through certain, perhaps boring, parts of the game (like fast-forwarding a recorded TV program or movie to get to the good parts) may use cheats to advance to the “more fun” areas of play.
